Hungarian National Philharmonic Violin soloist and conductor: Julian Rachlin

Tchaikovsky: Eugene Onegin - Polonaise Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto in E minor, op. 64 Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5 in E minor, op. 64

The Hungarian National Philharmonic's guest for tonight is a world-famous violinist and conductor: Julian Rachlin earned a spot in history by becoming the youngest soloist in the history of the Vienna Philharmonic and was soon making his Carnegie Hall début with Lorin Maazel and the New York Philharmonic. A past collaborator with conductors like Vladimir Ashkenazy, Bernard Haitink, James Levine, Zubin Mehta and André Previn, he also regularly performed chamber music with Mstislav Rostropovich. Other notable musical partners of his include Martha Argerich, Natalia Gutman, Gidon Kremer and Mischa Maisky. The Lithuanian musician has selected some Romantic gems for his Budapest concert. Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 - like Beethoven's own Fifth Symphony - was given the moniker "Fate”. This work of more than three-quarters of an hour in length is a portrait of a personality with a singularly rich inner world of anxieties, joys and memories. It is perhaps the music's unvarnished expression of human emotions that continues to captivate listeners today. Following the concert's opening Polonaise comes a chance to hear one of the loveliest creative works in the entire musical literature, Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor, as interpreted by a truly fantastic violinist.
