Pour la première fois, le célèbre mélodrame de Giacomo Puccini est inclus dans la programmation du Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. Le cinéaste français, Christophe Honoré, met en scène cette nouvelle production et choisit de moderniser cette oeuvre en y intégrant des éléments cinématographiques.

Basé sur le livret de Luigi Illica et Giuseppe Giacosa, lui-même inspiré de la pièce de Victorien Sardou La Tosca, l’opéra de Puccini fut un échec lors de sa première représentation en 1900 dû aux critiques intransigeantes. C’est grâce au public que l’oeuvre disgraciée devient un grand succès populaire et accède au statut de "chef d’oeuvre".

Le rôle de Tosca, cantatrice profondément amoureuse et jalouse, est un des rôles les plus convoités par les chanteuses lyriques pour sa prouesse musicale, sa complexité émotionnelle et sa profonde humanité. Christophe Honoré réinvente cet opéra en choisissant deux sopranos américaines pour le rôle de Tosca et en les faisant interagir ensemble sur scène. L’une, Angel Blue, commence à peine sa carrière très prometteuse. L’autre, Catherine Malfitano, est une chanteuse lyrique reconnue et célébrée, lauréate d’un Emmy Award en 1992 pour sa prestation de Tosca.

Cette oeuvre symbolise l’intérêt de Puccini pour le vérisme et le début de son affiliation au mouvement. Le metteur en scène français, pour qui "le cinéma repose sur un socle réaliste important", semble vouloir honorer la notion de vérisme en intégrant des éléments cinématographiques qui apportent, à cet opéra classique, une dimension plus naturaliste et réaliste.

Last interview with Maria Callas, April 1976 Tosca – the name snaps and blares. It refers to the opera of operas, and the role of roles: the greatest opera singers are consumed by it. Because the work makes theatre out of an opera singer. She will lose her revolutionary lover and her own life because she is sick with jealousy, and movingly pious. Programmed for the first time at the Festival d’Aix, Puccini’s master work will be staged by Christophe Honoré as a melancholic reminder of the fascinating theatrical creature of stage and sound that is this diva, this woman who lives “on art and on love” and on whom time and death have no hold.
