"Hippolyte et Aricie" by Jean-Philippe Rameau At the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Berlin

Encounters between the gods and mere mortals often raise tensions and lead to unpredictable outcomes. Hippolyte and Aricie, the couple in Rameau’s tragédie lyrique, experience the power of the gods at first hand through the intervention of Diana and Pluto. Reason is powerless in the face of tormented souls and uncontrollable emotions. Romance, mystery and terror are all powerful — in the forest, by the sea and in the underworld. The full extent of Rameau’s orchestral nuance is on show with music of deep richness, both in terms of writing and the forms that it evokes. Seriousness and light entertainment can be found side by side, along with lyrical depth and flashes of drama. The result is an entire cosmos, revealing both the treasures of Greek myth and the magic of French Baroque. With a score of infinite variety, magnificent dance and choral numbers, heavenly apparitions, spectacular forces of nature and monsters on stage, Hippolyte et Aricie transports its audience to a magical realm.

Hippolyte et Aricie is directed by Aletta Collins, with musical direction by Simon Rattle, who makes his debut with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra. The set design, costumes and lighting have been created by the artist Ólafur Eliasson. Anna Prohaska, Magdalena Kožená, Reinoud Van Mechelen, Gyula Orendt and Elsa Dreisig are singing the main roles.
